USA [ LINK : WSJ ] Archer Daniels Midland is the self-proclaimed “Supermarket to the World” (and, if I’m not mistaken, they also recorded “the Devil Went Down to Georgia”). They’ve reported record profits this past quarter, citing “higher selling prices” of their farm produce as the reason.

Sound familiar? Move over, Big Oil. Big Food running things ’round here now, yo.
I don’t know about you, but I fill my stomach more often than my fuel tank. I blame my parents, who got me hooked on food at a young age. (In retrospect, maybe it wasn’t the food so much as the tantalizing dispensers.)
Anyway, given that there are more restaurants than gas stations, I’d say we’re unlikely to kick our unhealthy national eating addiction any time soon.
Clearly, with ADM manipulating prices to grow rich off our hunger, we have to find alternative sources of nutrition. I know we get vitamin D from sunlight, so that’s a start. I wonder if our bodies can consume wind as well? Mine certainly produces its share, but that’s a different matter.

It shouldn’t be too long before an outraged Governor Doyle calls a press conference to demand that Big Food explain itself. Don’t they realize that their obscene profits are cutting into the American family’s fuel budget?
Whoops! Turns out ADM and its execs are big Doyle contributors. Well maybe Congress can– no, they’re bought and paid for too.
Well, it looks like America got the “change” they voted for quickly. Now, instead of all our money going to the corporate Republican cronies, all our money is going to the corporate Democrat cronies. I dunno if that’s “change we can live with”, exactly. But it’s change we’ll have to accept.
Hope for the best, my friends. That’s all we can do, now…

ADM has been an equal-opportunity corruption-machine since Eisenhower. Don’t look for any changes whatsoever in the policy of giving ADM whatever they want, no matter who gets screwed in the process–because ‘who gets screwed’ will NOT be ADM.

+1 to the comment above. I’ve always wondered how a company with such a wholesome name could be so corrupt.
Watch, next you’ll be reading about Whole Foods work/internment camps.
