GERMANTOWN, WI [ JG ] Imagine my surprise when I went to pay my tax bill that:
a) I was actually paying my tax bill; and
b) the Village of Germantown’s address is downtown Milwaukee:

I know there’s probably a reason that the treasurer, whose office I can nearly see from my roof (I get up there a lot around tax time) wants me to mail my check some twenty miles away from Germantown so that, presumably, somebody can go get it and bring it BACK.
Not a GOOD reason, mind you, but a reason. A government reason.
Of course, the person who goes to Milwaukee to bring my check back is probably a civil servant, and they likely get paid from the tax base for their service. Which is why I have to cut a check. Which is why we need to pay somebody to go and get it.
Hakuna matada…

That’s Tom Barrett’s personal PO Box!
More seriously, it’s a Bank-held pobox, meaning that the money gets to the Bank a lot sooner than if the Germantown treasure takes it there on his horse-drawn carriage.
