Wisconsin restaurant runs up against...

All Moo Can Eat

Thiensville, WI [JG]  I’m over 250 lbs, so I get to use the “M” word.  And that word is “moo”.

One of my fellow moos went to an “All You Can Eat” restaurant just up the road from me and ate all HE could eat, all the folks at the table next to him could eat, and all they could scrape up from whatever fell behind the refrigerator.  But neither he nor (what must be a substantial community of) his tapeworms could be satisfied:

Apologists for this bottomless pit are forced, when (cattle) prodded, to demand that the phrase “All You Can Eat” is somehow synonymous with “Infinite Food Supply for a Finite Price”.  It is not.

But there IS a simple solution:  Make a slight modification to the restaurant’s front door and change the sign to read “All You Can Eat for Anybody Who Fits Through Our New Turnstile”…

I’m a hefty guy myself (350 pound club). I do frequent the AYCE establishments. Unfortunately, here in Texas, they are mostly Chinese. We do have one BBQ restaurant which has AYCE ribs and recently a Mexican buffet (what…AYCE tacos?) opened. As much as I would like to see an AYCE fish place here, I don’t see it happening.

With this in mind, most AYCE restaurants are visited by the normal eater. That is, the person who eats until the “I’m full” bell goes off in the brain. For us who are not fully satisfied until the last morsel of food in several counties is scarfed down, this is what we have to live with. We eat, and eat, and eat, and eat some more until we think we have had enough, and we continue eating. Which is why we have an obesity problem in the US. Many restaurants want us to eat until we cannot eat anymore, but this is offset by the ginormous portion sizes we are served anyway. They want us to eat these exorbitant helpings of food. Because they know that if they are generous with portions, then the customer will return. Same for AYCE buffets. If you offer the customer with what seems to be an unlimited amount of food, then the customer will have to return (and pay) to try everything that is offered. And the business which offers AYCE must, inevitably, face the one customer who resembles a large member of the animal planet and comes in to scarf down as much food as their body can handle. The proprietors of Chinese buffets know this, which is why they usually offer 2-3,000 menu items, all purchased as cheaply as possible in order to maximize profit. Not so with fish. With fish in limited supply, those of us who love fish seek out these places in order to satisfy our Baleen-whale appetites.

In short, yes, go ahead and offer AYCE. We will take advantage of it, even if it puts you out of business. We can always go suck down sushi at the nearest Chinese AYCE buffet.

Until they run us out if there as well.
